DTF Troubleshooting: Why Your Transfer Failed
Five causes, ranked by how often they are the answer.

Work through it like this.
1. Paper test the pressure. Closed platen, sheet of paper, real resistance when pulled. Test the centre and all four corners — uneven platens are common and a large design reaches into the weak corner. How →

Why these keep happening.
Under-pressure hides itself
An under-pressed print peels cleanly, looks correct, and goes out the door. The failure arrives weeks later in somebody else's laundry, by which point nobody connects it back to the press. Temperature problems announce themselves immediately — scorch marks, film distortion — which is precisely why they get caught and pressure problems do not. Test pressure routinely rather than diagnostically.
The second press feels optional and is not
After the peel the garment looks finished, which makes the second press feel like a nicety. It is doing the work that determines whether the ink is in the fabric or on it. Fifteen seconds.
Thicker garments quietly change your pressure
Pressure is set by the gap between platens, so the same setting delivers meaningfully less pressure on a 9 oz hoodie than on a 4.3 oz tee. A shop that has been pressing tees successfully for months will suddenly get failures the first week it runs hoodies, and nothing about the setup changed. Re-run the paper test whenever you change garment type.
Occasionally it is the transfer.
Rarely, but it happens. Signs that point at the print rather than the press: the same failure across an entire batch when your settings have not changed, visible defects in the print itself before it is applied, or adhesive powder that is obviously uneven across the sheet.

Frequently asked questions
- Why are the edges of my DTF print lifting?
- Insufficient pressure, in the great majority of cases. Run the paper test: with the platen closed on the garment, a sheet of paper should resist noticeably when pulled. The second most likely cause is skipping the second press.
- Why did the ink come off with the film when I peeled?
- You peeled while it was still warm. Our film is cold peel — wait 20–30 seconds until it is cool to the touch. Once ink has lifted with the carrier the print cannot be rescued; press a new transfer.
- Why does my print have cloudy or patchy edges?
- Usually moisture in the garment. Pre-press for 3–5 seconds with the platen closed and no transfer, which drives out humidity and flattens seams. This is most common on cotton and in humid conditions.
- Why is there a shiny rectangle around my design?
- Too much heat, too long, or both — you are seeing the platen impression. Check the platen temperature with a laser thermometer rather than trusting the dial, and shorten the press.
- Why did the shirt colour bleed into my print?
- Dye migration, which happens on polyester when the garment dye sublimates under heat and moves into the print. Drop to 270–285°F and 8–10 seconds, and prefer lighter garments where the design allows.
- My print feels stiff and plasticky. What went wrong?
- You skipped the second press. Pressing again for 10–15 seconds under a silicone sheet or parchment melts the ink into the fibres, drops the sheen and softens the hand noticeably.
