How Much Pressure for DTF Transfers?

Medium-firm, around 40–60 psi. Most heat presses do not tell you the number, so the practical test is a sheet of paper: with the platen closed, it should take real effort to pull out. If it slides freely, you are under-pressed — and under-pressure causes more failed DTF prints than temperature and time combined.
The range

Where you want to be.

The band is wider than people assume — anywhere in 40 to 60 psi works. The problem is almost never being slightly off; it is being nowhere near, which is easy to do without noticing.
The paper test

Checking without a gauge.

Very few presses in small shops display an actual psi figure, and the ones that do are not always accurate. The paper test costs nothing, takes five seconds and is what most experienced operators actually rely on.

1. Lay the garment on the platen as you would to press it.

2. Slide a sheet of ordinary paper under the top platen, near the middle.

3. Close and latch the press.

4. Pull the paper out. You should feel significant resistance — it should drag, and it may tear.

5. Repeat near each corner. Even pressure across the platen matters as much as the amount.

Run the test at the centre and all four corners. Uneven pressure across a platen is common, and it means part of a large design is under-pressed even when the middle is fine.
By garment

Adjusting for thickness.

This is the part that catches people out on their second garment type. Pressure is set by the gap between the platens, so the same setting produces very different actual pressure depending on how thick the garment is. A press dialled in perfectly for 4.3 oz tees will be meaningfully under-pressed on a 9 oz hoodie.

The habit worth building: run the paper test whenever you change garment type, not whenever something goes wrong. It takes five seconds and it prevents the failure rather than diagnosing it three weeks later.

Uneven platens

When the middle is fine and the edges are not.

Heat presses wear unevenly, and clamshell presses in particular can develop more pressure at the front than the back. If your prints consistently fail in the same corner, that is not a coincidence and it is not the transfers.

How to spot it

Run the paper test at five points — centre and four corners. If resistance varies noticeably between them, the platen is uneven. On a small left-chest print you may never notice; on a full-front design, one corner is being under-pressed every single time.

What to do about it

Most presses have adjustment for this — a levelling screw or a pressure adjustment knob that can be tuned. Failing that, a pressing pillow under the garment evens out contact considerably and is worth having anyway for garments with seams, zips or pockets near the print area.

Why this page exists

Under-pressure is the number one cause of failure.

When someone tells us a transfer lifted after a few washes, pressure is the first thing we ask about, and it is the answer more often than everything else combined. The reason it goes undetected is that an under-pressed print looks completely fine. It peels cleanly, the colour is right, and the garment goes out the door. The failure arrives three weeks later in somebody's laundry.

Temperature problems usually announce themselves — scorch marks, distorted film, ink lifting with the carrier. Pressure problems stay silent until they are somebody else's problem. Yes, though it is far less common. Excessive pressure can leave a visible platen impression around the design, flatten the garment texture, and on very thick fabric it can push the design into the weave unevenly.
Do I need to change pressure for thicker garments?
Yes, and it is the step people forget. A press set correctly for a thin tee will be under-pressed on a heavy hoodie, because the fabric compresses far more. Re-check with the paper test whenever you change garment type.
Does the same pressure apply to the second press?
