How to Press DTF Transfers (Settings That Actually Work)

Buy a laser thermometer and check your platen. A great many presses read 15–20°F off their own dial, and that gap is precisely the difference between a print that lasts and one that lifts. It is a twenty-dollar tool that eliminates the most common variable in the whole process.
Five steps, in order.
- 1Pre-press the garment — 3–5 seconds
Close the empty press on the garment for a few seconds. This drives out humidity held in the fibres and flattens seams and wrinkles. Skipping it is the number one cause of cloudy edges and partial adhesion on cotton, and it costs you five seconds.
- 2Position the transfer
Print side down. Check the placement against the collar and the centre line before you close the press — a crooked print is not recoverable. A ruler or a placement guide is worth using on anything you are selling.
- 3Press — 10–15 seconds at 40–60 psi
At the temperature for your fabric. Longer is not better: past about 15 seconds you gain no adhesion and start risking scorch marks on the garment and the film.
- 4Cold peel — wait 20–30 seconds
Lift the platen and leave it. The film must be cool to the touch before you peel. Peeling hot pulls ink up with the film and ruins the print. If you are in a hurry, fan it — do not rush it.
- 5Second press — 10–15 seconds
Cover the design with a silicone finishing sheet or parchment and press again at the same temperature. This is not optional.
Why the second press matters so much.
After the first press and the peel, the design is sitting on the garment and it looks finished. It is not. The second press does three things that nothing else does:
The first press bonds the adhesive; the second drives the ink deeper into the fabric structure. That is what turns a print sitting on a shirt into a print that is part of it.
A freshly peeled DTF print is glossy. After a second press under silicone it reads as a soft matte, which looks far more like a screen print and considerably less like a sticker.
If you take one thing from this page: prints that fail in the wash are usually prints that were never second-pressed. It costs fifteen seconds.
What to cover it with
In order of preference: a silicone-coated finishing sheet (reusable, best surface, no fibres), parchment paper (cheap and works well — use a fresh sheet once the old one has glossy patches), or a Teflon sheet (fine, but tends to leave a glossier finish).
Do not use plain copy paper, a towel, or the release film you just peeled. They will either stick to the print or emboss their texture into it.
How to know if you have enough.
Medium-firm, around 40–60 psi. Most presses do not tell you the number, so use the paper test: with the platen closed on the garment, try to pull a sheet of paper out from under it. You should feel significant resistance. If it slides out easily, you are under-pressed.
- Paper resists noticeably when you pull it out from under the closed platen.
- The handle takes real effort to close and latch.
- Adhesive is driven into the fibres across the whole design.
- Edges stay down through repeated washing.
- Paper slides out with little or no resistance.
- The handle closes easily with one finger.
- Adhesive only bonds where the platen happened to make contact.
- Edges start lifting within a handful of washes.
Thicker garments need the pressure adjusted, not just the time. A hoodie compresses far more than a thin tee, so a press set correctly for tees will be under-pressed on fleece. Adjust for the garment you are actually running.
The four things that go wrong.

What to tell your customer.
Wait 24 hours before the first wash so the bond fully sets. Then wash inside out, cold, on a gentle cycle, and tumble dry low or hang dry. Do not iron directly over the print — if it needs pressing, put a cloth over it or iron inside out.

- What temperature should I press DTF at?
- 305–315°F (150–157°C) on cotton and most blends. Drop to 270–285°F (132–140°C) on heat-sensitive synthetics like polyester, performance wear and fleece, to avoid scorching and dye migration.
- How long should I press for?
- 10–15 seconds for the first press on cotton, 8–10 seconds on synthetics. Pressing longer does not improve adhesion — it just risks scorching the film and the garment.
- How much pressure do I need?
- Medium-firm, about 40–60 psi. A good test: with the platen closed on the garment, you should not be able to pull a sheet of paper out without real resistance. Too little pressure is the single most common cause of edges lifting after a few washes.
- Are your transfers hot peel or cold peel?
- Cold peel. Press, lift the platen, and wait 20–30 seconds until the film is genuinely cool to the touch before peeling. Hot-peeling pulls the ink up with the film and ruins the print.
- Do I really need a second press?
- Yes. After the cold peel, cover the design with a silicone finishing sheet or parchment paper and press again for 10–15 seconds. It melts the ink into the fibres, drops the sheen to a soft matte, and dramatically improves wash durability. It is the step people skip and then complain about.
- Can I use a household iron?
- Not reliably. An iron cannot deliver even pressure across the whole design or hold a stable temperature, and you will get partial adhesion that fails in the wash. A heat press is the one piece of equipment genuinely worth buying.
- Why are the edges of my print lifting?
- Almost always insufficient pressure, or skipping the pre-press or the second press. Check your pressure with the paper test, pre-press the garment for 3–5 seconds to drive out moisture, and always second-press under a silicone sheet.
