What Temperature to Heat Press DTF Transfers

When you are not sure which band a garment sits in, check the label and treat anything over about 50% polyester as a synthetic. If the label is gone, start at the lower band and test on a spare — an under-pressed test is recoverable, a scorched garment is not.
Your press dial is probably wrong.
This is the part that catches out more people than any fabric chart. Heat press platens commonly read 15–20°F away from what the dial says, and the discrepancy is not always consistent across the platen surface — the edges frequently run cooler than the centre.
A press set to 310°F that actually delivers 292°F will produce prints that look perfect coming off the press and start lifting after four washes. A press set to 310°F that actually delivers 328°F will scorch light garments. Both problems present as “the transfers are bad” and neither has anything to do with the transfers.
- Read the platen at the centre and all four corners.
- Adjust the dial until the true reading is in the band.
- Re-check every few months — platens drift.
- Note the offset somewhere near the press.
- Commonly 15–20°F away from the true platen temperature.
- Cool corners mean part of your design is under-pressed.
- Failures show up weeks later in the wash, not on the press.
- You end up blaming the transfers.

Signs you are too hot
A shiny or yellowed rectangle on the garment where the platen sat. The film wrinkling or distorting during the press. Colours from a dark garment bleeding up into a light print within a few washes — that is dye migration, and it is a polyester problem that heat makes much worse.
Signs you are too cold
The print looks fine, peels fine, and then the edges start lifting after a handful of washes. Occasionally you can feel it immediately: the design sits on top of the fabric rather than in it, and a fingernail catches the edge.

- What temperature should I press DTF transfers at?
- 305–315°F (150–157°C) on cotton and most poly-cotton blends. Drop to 270–285°F (132–140°C) on 100% polyester, performance fabric and anything else heat-sensitive.
- What happens if the press is too hot?
- Three things, in order of how often we see them: scorch marks on the garment (a shiny or yellowed rectangle where the platen sat), the film distorting or wrinkling, and dye migration pulling the garment colour up into your print on polyester.
- What happens if the press is too cold?
- The adhesive never fully melts into the fibres. It usually looks fine coming off the press and then lifts at the edges after a few washes — which is why "it looked perfect when I pressed it" is such a common complaint.
- Is my heat press temperature accurate?
- Frequently not. Platens commonly read 15–20°F away from the dial, and they can be uneven across the surface. A laser thermometer costs about twenty dollars and removes the single biggest unknown in the whole process.
- Do I use the same temperature for the second press?
- Yes — same temperature, 10–15 seconds, with a silicone sheet or parchment over the design. There is no need to change the setting between presses.
- What temperature for hoodies and fleece?
- The same 305–315°F as cotton, but use the longer end of the time range (12–15 seconds) and re-check your pressure, because thick fleece compresses far more than a thin tee.
