Dye Migration in DTF: Causes and How to Stop It

You press a white logo onto a red performance shirt. It looks perfect. Three days later it is pink. That is dye migration — the garment's own dye sublimating under heat and moving into your print. It only happens on polyester, it is not reversible, and it is almost entirely controlled by how much heat you use.
The mechanism

What is actually happening.

Polyester cannot be dyed the way cotton is. It is coloured with disperse dyes, which are driven into the fibre under heat and pressure at the mill. The important property of a disperse dye is that it sublimates — under enough heat it converts straight from solid to gas.

Your heat press supplies exactly that heat. The dye turns to gas, the gas moves, and if there is a freshly applied transfer sitting on the fabric it moves into that. Light colours show it worst because there is nothing to hide behind: white goes pink on red, bluish on navy, grey-purple on maroon.

Cotton does not do this. Reactive dyes bond chemically to the fibre and do not sublimate, which is why cotton is the forgiving fabric and polyester is not.

Why it fools people

It shows up after you have shipped.

The cruel part of dye migration is the delay. The press starts the process, but the dye keeps moving into the print for hours and days afterwards. A garment inspected at the press and packed the same afternoon looks completely fine.

It also gets worse every time the garment is reheated — which means the customer's first tumble dry accelerates it. A batch can leave your shop perfect and arrive as a complaint two weeks later.

The practical consequence: press one, leave it 24 hours, then look at it. That single habit prevents the entire category of problem, and on a run of a hundred garments it costs you a day and one transfer.

Heat is the driver.

Sublimation is temperature-dependent. Every degree you can take off the press reduces how much dye converts to gas, and dwell time compounds it — thirty seconds at 300°F does far more damage than eight seconds at 275°F.

Pressing polyester at cotton temperatures is the most common cause of severe dye migration. Thirty degrees is the difference between a clean white print and a pink one.

Lever two

Garment colour matters enormously.

Not all dyes sublimate equally. Some pigments are far more mobile than others, which is why red has a reputation and grey does not.

Relative risk by garment colour on polyester. Red is the notorious one; black is less of a problem than most people assume.

Two practical implications. If a design can work on a lighter garment, put it on one. And if the design is light-on-dark on a red or maroon polyester shirt, treat that as the highest-risk combination there is and test it properly before committing.

Test the specific garment.

Dye behaviour varies by manufacturer, by product line and by dye lot. A blank that behaved perfectly last spring can migrate this spring, from the same supplier, in the same colour. Nothing about your press changed; the garment did.

The test that actually works

1. Press one garment from the actual batch at your intended settings.

2. Leave it 24 hours somewhere warm. Do not judge it at the press.

3. Run it through a hot dryer cycle — this accelerates what a customer will do anyway.

4. Look at the lightest area of the print in daylight.

With no minimum order, that test costs one transfer. On a two-hundred-piece order it is the cheapest decision on the whole job.

What is dye migration?

Why does it appear days after pressing?
Because it keeps happening after the press. The initial heat starts it, and residual dye continues migrating into the print over the following hours and days — and again every time the garment is heated in a dryer. A print that looked perfect on Monday can be visibly discoloured by Thursday.
Does dye migration happen on cotton?
No. Cotton uses reactive dyes that do not sublimate. This is purely a polyester and poly-blend problem, and it is one of the main reasons cotton is the easier fabric to press.
How do I stop dye migration?
Lower the temperature to 270–285°F, shorten the press to 8–10 seconds, prefer lighter garment colours where the design allows, and test the specific garment before committing to a run. Heat is the driver, so every reduction in heat helps.
Which garment colours are worst?
Deep reds are the most notorious by a wide margin, followed by navy, purple, maroon and bright orange. Black is less of a problem than people expect. Light greys and pastels are largely safe.
Can dye migration be reversed?
No. Once the dye is in the print it is there. This is why testing one garment and leaving it 24 hours before running a batch is worth the delay.
