How to Press DTF on Polyester Without Scorching

Dye migration, explained.
Scorching is obvious and immediate. Dye migration is neither, which is what makes it the more expensive failure.
Polyester is dyed with disperse dyes, and under heat those dyes sublimate — they turn from solid to gas without melting. That gas moves, and if there is a freshly applied print sitting on the fabric, it moves into it. A crisp white print on a red performance shirt comes off the press looking perfect and turns pink over the next few days.
- 270–285°F for 8–10 seconds.
- Test one garment and leave it 24 hours before the run.
- Prefer lighter garment colours where the design allows.
- Second press at the same lower temperature.
- 305–315°F for 15 seconds is far too aggressive.
- Shiny platen impression around the design.
- Garment dye bleeds into light prints over the following days.
- Not reversible once it has happened.
What actually reduces it
Lower temperature, shorter dwell. The most effective lever by a wide margin. Heat is what drives sublimation.
Lighter garments. A grey or light blue shirt has far less dye to migrate than a deep red or navy one.
Test the specific garment. Dye behaviour varies by manufacturer and by dye lot. A blank that behaved last year may not this year.
Let the test sit. Migration is not always visible immediately. Press one, leave it 24 hours, then look.
Hi-vis and flame-resistant garments.
A lot of the polyester we print for ends up on a job site, and safety apparel needs more care than a team jersey does.
Hi-vis
The base fabric is normally polyester and presses at 270–285°F like any other. Two rules: never press over the reflective tape — it will not survive the heat and the tape is doing a job — and keep the print clear of areas the garment's certification requires to remain visible. Placement on hi-vis is a safety decision as much as a design one.
Flame-resistant apparel
Check with the garment manufacturer before decorating certified FR apparel. FR garments are certified as complete assemblies, and applying anything to one can affect that certification. Polyester is where DTF wins.
Direct-to-garment printing needs cotton — its inks are formulated to bond with cotton fibres, and results on polyester are unreliable at best. Screen printing can do polyester but needs the right ink system and a setup cost that only makes sense at volume.
DTF does not care what the fabric is, because the adhesive layer does the bonding rather than the ink. That is why team jerseys, hi-vis workwear, performance tees, fleece and softshells are overwhelmingly DTF work — and why an awful lot of Canadian apparel orders end up here rather than with a DTG printer. - What temperature do you press DTF on polyester?
- 270–285°F (132–140°C) for 8–10 seconds, rather than the 305–315°F you would use on cotton. Polyester is heat-sensitive and will scorch, gloss or shrink at cotton temperatures.
- What is dye migration?
- The dye in a polyester garment turning to gas under heat and moving up into your print. It shows up as the garment colour bleeding through — most visibly as a white print on a red or navy shirt going pink or blue over the following days or washes.
- How do I stop dye migration?
- Keep the temperature and dwell time down: 270–285°F for 8–10 seconds. Lighter-coloured garments migrate less than deep reds, navies and blacks. And test one garment first — dye behaviour varies by manufacturer and dye lot, not just by colour.
- Can you press DTF on hi-vis safety shirts?
- Yes, on the polyester hi-vis is normally made from, at 270–285°F. Keep the print clear of reflective tape and away from any area the garment's certification requires to remain visible. For certified flame-resistant garments, check with the manufacturer before decorating — FR apparel is certified as a complete assembly.
- Does DTF work on performance and moisture-wicking fabric?
- Yes — this is one of the main reasons DTF is used instead of direct-to-garment printing on team and athletic apparel. Use the lower temperature band and keep the dwell short.
- Why does my print look shiny on polyester?
- You are too hot. Polyester glosses under excessive heat, leaving a shiny rectangle where the platen sat. Drop the temperature and shorten the press — and check the platen with a laser thermometer, because the dial may be reading low.
