How to Press DTF on Cotton

305–315°F for 10–15 seconds at 40–60 psi, cold peel, then second press. Cotton is the most forgiving surface DTF goes on — no dye migration to worry about, a wide temperature window, and nothing that scorches easily. If you are learning to press, learn here before you touch polyester.
Settings

The cotton band is wide.

Cotton sits in the upper band and tolerates the whole of it. That ten-degree window is genuinely forgiving compared with polyester, where being thirty degrees high causes real problems.

Why cotton is forgiving

Three problems you simply do not have.

No dye migration

Cotton is dyed with reactive dyes, which do not sublimate under heat. That removes the single most frustrating polyester failure mode — the one where a white print on a red shirt turns pink three days after it looked perfect. On cotton it just does not happen.

A wider temperature window

Cotton tolerates the full 305–315°F band and a fair bit either side before anything visible goes wrong. Polyester will gloss or scorch if you are twenty degrees high. That matters because most press dials are inaccurate by 15–20°F anyway — on cotton, that error is usually absorbed.

No gloss

Overheated polyester develops a shiny rectangle where the platen sat. Cotton does not gloss, so a slightly hot press leaves no permanent mark on the garment.

What still goes wrong

Two cotton-specific problems.

Cloudy or patchy edges — moisture

Cotton is absorbent and holds far more humidity than people expect, particularly straight out of a poly bag or in a humid shop. Under the platen that moisture turns to steam and interferes with adhesion, leaving a faint cloudy halo around the design.

The fix is the pre-press: 3–5 seconds with the platen closed and no transfer, before you lay anything down. It is the single most skipped step in the sequence and the single most common cotton complaint.

Under-pressure on heavyweight garments

A press set correctly for a 4.3 oz tee will be under-pressed on a 6.5 oz heavyweight, because pressure is set by the gap between platens and thicker fabric compresses more. Run the paper test whenever you switch weights. How to check pressure →

Blends

Where cotton stops being cotton.

A 50/50 poly-cotton blend behaves close enough to cotton that the same settings usually work. Past about 65% polyester, treat it as a synthetic: drop to 270–285°F and shorten the press to 8–10 seconds. Tri-blends contain rayon, which is more heat-sensitive than either — 285–300°F for 10–12 seconds is a safer starting point.

Is cotton easier than polyester for DTF?
Considerably. Cotton tolerates a wider temperature window, does not suffer dye migration, and will not gloss or scorch as readily. If you are learning to press, learn on cotton.
Does a heavier cotton tee need different settings?
Same temperature, the longer end of the time range, and a pressure re-check. A 6 oz tee compresses more than a 4.3 oz one, so a press dialled in for lightweight shirts will be slightly under-pressed on heavy ones.
Why does my cotton print have cloudy edges?
Moisture in the fabric. Pre-press the garment for 3–5 seconds with the platen closed and no transfer. This is the most common cotton-specific problem and the fix takes five seconds.
Can I press DTF on ringspun or combed cotton?
Yes, and the finer surface usually gives a slightly crisper result than open-weave heavyweight cotton. Settings are unchanged.
What about garment-dyed or washed cotton?
It works, but the surface can be less even and pigment-dyed garments occasionally show slight colour shift under the platen. Test one before running a batch.
