The White Underbase in DTF, Explained
A layer you never see.
Printing inks are translucent. Put cyan on a black surface and you get black — the ink has nothing to reflect against. That is why coloured ink printed straight onto a dark garment would look muddy and half-invisible.
The white underbase solves it. A layer of opaque white ink is laid down first, in exactly the shape of your design, and the colours print on top of that. The white gives them something bright to sit against, so a red stays red whether the shirt is white, grey or navy.
Why you should not make one.
Production generates the white layer by reading your artwork: wherever there is opaque artwork, white goes behind it; wherever your file is transparent, nothing prints at all. The white layer follows your design shape exactly, including complex outlines and semi-transparent edges.
If you add your own white rectangle or white silhouette behind the design, the printer has no way to know it was meant as scaffolding rather than artwork. It is opaque, so it gets treated as part of the design — and it prints.

White you actually want.
None of this means you cannot use white in a design. White text, white outlines, white highlights and white shapes that are part of the artwork all print perfectly well, and on a dark garment they are often the strongest element in the piece.
The distinction is intent, and the printer cannot read intent — only opacity. So the rule is simple: include white that you want to see on the shirt, and nothing else. If a white area is there to “fill in the background”, delete it and let the file be transparent instead.

Soft edges and the halo problem.
Because the underbase follows your artwork, anything odd at the edges of your design becomes odd in the white layer too.
Semi-transparent edges
Drop shadows, glows and feathered edges are partially transparent, so they get a partial underbase. On a dark garment that reads as a soft fade, which is usually exactly what you intended. It is worth knowing it will look different on black than it does on your white screen.
The near-white halo
Automatic background removers frequently leave a fringe of very-light-but-not-transparent pixels around the artwork. Those are opaque enough to get an underbase, so on a dark garment you get a faint glowing outline around the whole design. Check the edges at high zoom against a dark background before ordering. Why dense designs feel thicker.
More ink means more thickness. A design with large solid areas has white plus colour stacked across all of it, so you can feel it more than a design with lots of open space. This is inherent to any process using a white underbase, including screen printing on dark garments.
The second press makes a substantial difference here — it melts the stack further into the fibres and drops the surface sheen, which both looks and feels considerably better. If your prints feel plasticky, the second press is almost certainly the missing step. What to press under →

- Do I need to add a white underbase to my DTF file?
- No. The white layer is generated automatically in production from the artwork you supply, wherever your design needs to be opaque. Adding your own white shape means it prints as part of the design and you will see it.
- What does the white underbase actually do?
- It sits behind your colours so they stay opaque on a dark garment. Without it, coloured ink on a black shirt would look transparent and muddy — the fabric colour would show straight through.
- Do I need it on a white shirt?
- The white layer is still generated, and it is still doing useful work: it gives the colours a consistent base regardless of the garment, so the same transfer looks the same on white, grey or heather.
- What happens if I put a white box behind my design?
- It prints. You get a solid white rectangle around your artwork on the garment. This is the single most common file mistake we see after JPGs with white backgrounds, and it is the same underlying misunderstanding.
- Can I have deliberate white in my design?
- Yes, and it works well. White text, white outlines and white shapes that are meant to be visible all print correctly. The distinction is between white you intend to see and white you added as a "background" — the printer cannot tell them apart, so only include the first kind.
- Why does my print look slightly thicker where the design is dense?
- Because there are more ink layers stacked there — white plus colour. It is normal and the second press flattens it considerably. Designs with lots of open space feel thinner than large solid blocks.
