Best File Format for DTF Printing

Why it is the default.
PNG does the two things a DTF file has to do: it stores true transparency, and it stores it losslessly. Every part of your file that is transparent simply does not print — no ink, no adhesive powder, no film residue. That is what gives you a shape that follows your artwork rather than a rectangle around it.
It is also lossless, which matters at edges. JPG compression works by discarding information it judges imperceptible, and it makes that judgement worst exactly where contrast is highest — the boundary between your design and the background. Those artefacts are invisible on screen at 50% zoom and clearly visible printed at twelve inches wide.
Exporting a PNG properly
• Set your document to the finished print size in inches, at 300 DPI.
• Turn off any background layer — check it, do not assume it.
• Export as PNG-24 (with alpha), not PNG-8.
• Crop tight to the artwork; empty canvas is area you pay for.
When it is the better choice.
A PDF is worth sending when the artwork is genuinely vector — built from paths and live type in software like Illustrator, Affinity Designer or CorelDRAW. Vector art has no resolution, so it prints sharp at three inches and at twenty-two. For a logo with clean edges and small text, that is a real advantage over any pixel format.
The catch is that “it is a PDF” tells you nothing on its own. A PDF is a container, and a PDF containing a 600-pixel JPG someone pasted in is exactly as low-resolution as that JPG. If you did not build the file in vector software yourself, do not assume it is vector.
Quick check: open the PDF and zoom to 800%. Vector artwork stays perfectly crisp. Anything that goes blocky is a raster image wearing a PDF costume.
The white box problem.
JPG has no alpha channel. There is no mechanism in the format for “nothing here” — every pixel must have a colour, so the area around your design gets stored as white.
On screen, against a white page, that looks like a transparent background. It is not. Send it for printing and every one of those white pixels prints as white ink. On a white garment you might not notice. On black, navy or red, you get a hard white rectangle around your design, and it will look exactly as bad as it sounds.

- Degrades further every time it is re-saved.
There is a second problem: JPG is lossy, and re-saving a JPG repeatedly compounds the damage. A logo that has been emailed, saved, re-saved and screenshotted across a few years can be visibly degraded before it ever reaches us.

DPI, explained without the jargon.
DPI only means something in relation to a physical size. “300 DPI” on its own is not a property of your file in any useful sense — what matters is how many pixels you have across the width you intend to print.

Work it out by multiplying: print width in inches × 300 = pixels you need. If your file has fewer, it will print softer than it looks on screen — a monitor shows roughly 100 pixels per inch, so everything looks about three times sharper there than it will on fabric.
More is not better past this point. A 6000-pixel file for a 10-inch print is a large upload with no visible benefit.
Checking your file in thirty seconds.
1. Is the background actually transparent? View it against a dark background. If a white or grey rectangle appears, it is not.
2. Does it have the pixels? Print width × 300. Check the image dimensions against that number.
3. Zoom to 100% and look at the edges. Soft, fuzzy or haloed edges in the file will be soft, fuzzy or haloed on the shirt.
4. Is it cropped tight? Empty space around the artwork is area you are paying for.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the best file format for DTF printing?
- PNG, in almost every case. It supports genuine transparency, it is lossless, and every design tool exports it. Save it at around 300 DPI at the size you want printed and you are done.
- Is PDF better than PNG for DTF?
- Only when your artwork is genuinely vector — a logo built in Illustrator, for instance. A vector PDF scales to any size without losing sharpness. A PDF that just contains a low-resolution image inside it is no better than that image on its own.
- Can I send a JPG?
- You can, and we accept it, but JPG cannot store transparency. Anything that looks white in your file will print as white ink. On a white shirt you may not notice; on a black one you get a visible white box around your design.
- What DPI do I need for DTF?
- Around 300 DPI at the final print size. A 10-inch-wide print wants roughly 3000 pixels of width. The number that matters is pixels at print size, not the DPI value stored in the file.
- Does a bigger file mean better print quality?
- Only up to a point. Beyond about 300 DPI at print size you are adding file size without adding anything visible. Upscaling a small image to a large pixel count does not add detail either — it just makes a soft image bigger.
- How do I check my file has real transparency?
- Open it and put a dark layer behind it, or view it against a dark background. If a white or grey rectangle appears around your design, the background is not transparent — it just looked transparent against a white screen.
