Pressing DTF on Hoodies and Fleece
Why your tee settings under-press a hoodie.
Pressure on a heat press is set by the gap between the platens. You dial it in once against a garment of a given thickness and it stays there. Put a 9 oz hoodie where a 4.3 oz tee used to be and the fabric compresses far more — the platens close on a much thicker, springier object and the actual pressure delivered to the print drops.
Nothing about the press looks different. The dial has not moved, the temperature is right, the time is right. The prints just start lifting a month later, and because the tees are still fine it takes people a long time to work out what changed.
- Paper test with the actual hoodie on the platen.
- Adjust until you feel real resistance.
- Press 12–15 seconds rather than 10.
- Re-test again if you switch fleece weight.
- Thicker fabric absorbs the pressure you set for tees.
- Nothing looks wrong at the press.
- Edges lift weeks later, on hoodies only.

The pouch pocket is the constraint.
A hoodie gives you a shorter vertical window than a tee. The collar and hood seam bound the top, and the pouch pocket bounds the bottom — and the pocket is not negotiable, because its raised seam means the platen bridges over it and never contacts the fabric either side. Press across it and you get an unpressed band straight through the design.

Three things worth doing.
Use a pressing pillow
A pillow under the print area lifts it above surrounding seams, zips and the pocket, so the platen contacts your design rather than bridging over hardware. On hoodies with front zips it turns an awkward garment into a straightforward one.
Pre-press for longer
Fleece holds more moisture than a thin tee. Five seconds rather than three is worth it, and it also flattens the nap so the transfer sits against a more even surface.
Do not skip the second press
It matters more here than on a tee. Hoodies are worn hard, washed often and stretched across the shoulders, and the second press is what drives ink into the fibres rather than leaving it on top of a fluffy surface. What to press under →
Frequently asked questions
- What settings for DTF on a hoodie?
- 305–315°F for 12–15 seconds on cotton or cotton-blend fleece — the longer end of the range because the fabric is thicker. Re-check your pressure with the paper test before the first one.
- Why do my hoodie prints lift when my tee prints do not?
- Almost always pressure. Pressure is set by the gap between platens, so thick fleece compresses far more than a thin tee — a press dialled in for tees will be meaningfully under-pressed on a hoodie without anything visibly changing.
- Can I press over the pouch pocket seam?
- No. The raised seam means the platen bridges over it and never touches the fabric either side, leaving an unpressed line through your design. Keep the print above the pocket line.
- Does fleece flatten under the press?
- Slightly, and it usually recovers. Heavily napped or sherpa-style fleece can hold a platen impression, so test one garment before running a batch of anything unusually fluffy.
- What about performance or poly fleece?
- Drop to 270–285°F for 8–10 seconds. A lot of modern athletic hoodies are polyester or a poly-heavy blend even when they feel like cotton — check the label.
- How big should a hoodie front print be?
- 10–12 inches wide, sitting above the pouch pocket. That is a shorter vertical window than a tee gives you, so wide-and-short designs work better on hoodies than tall ones.
