Cold Peel vs Hot Peel DTF: Which Film Is Which
What the terms actually mean.
Hot peel and cold peel describe when the carrier film is designed to be removed, and that is determined by the adhesive chemistry of the film itself. It is not a technique you get to choose — it is a property of the product in your hand.

- Wait 20–30 seconds until the film is cool to the touch.
- Peel back at a shallow angle in one smooth motion.
- All the ink stays on the garment.
- Then second-press under a silicone sheet.
- The adhesive has not fully set into the fibres yet.
- Ink lifts away with the carrier film.
- You get missing patches or a smeared, stretched look.
- Not recoverable — press a new transfer.
Where the peel sits in the sequence.
Knowing when it is actually cool.
Twenty to thirty seconds is a guideline, not a rule — how long it genuinely takes depends on the room, the garment and how big the print is.
Touch the film, not the garment. The fabric cools faster than the film sitting on it. If the film feels warm, it is not ready.
Thick garments hold heat longer. A heavy hoodie can easily need 40 seconds where a thin tee needs 20.
A warm shop slows everything down. In August next to a running press, add time.
Large prints need longer. More area means more stored heat in the middle, which is exactly where a premature peel shows.
If in doubt, wait longer. Nothing bad happens to a cold-peel transfer that sits an extra thirty seconds.
How to run a batch without waiting around.
The cool-down looks like dead time, and in a run of fifty garments it adds up. The answer is to stagger rather than to rush.
Stagger the line
Press garment two while garment one cools. By the time you have pressed and laid up the next one, the first is ready to peel. This costs you nothing and removes the wait entirely — most experienced operators do it without thinking about it.
Move them to a cool surface
A metal bench or a cooling rack pulls heat out considerably faster than leaving a garment on a warm platen or a stack of other garments.
Fan them
A small desk fan pointed at the cooling area is one of the cheapest genuine productivity improvements in a small print shop.
You peeled too early. Now what?
Honestly: press a new transfer. Once ink has lifted with the film there is nothing on the garment to rescue — the missing areas are missing, and pressing over them will not put ink back.
If only a corner started lifting and you caught it immediately, lay the film back down, close the press for another 5–10 seconds, let it cool properly, and try again. That sometimes works. If any ink has already transferred to the carrier, it does not.

- Cold peel. Press, lift the platen, and wait 20–30 seconds until the film is genuinely cool to the touch before peeling it away.
- What happens if I peel a cold peel transfer while it is hot?
- The ink comes up with the film. You get a print with chunks missing or a stretched, smeared look, and it is not recoverable — the transfer is finished. This is the single most avoidable mistake in DTF pressing.
- How do I know when it is cool enough?
- Touch it. The film should feel cool, not warm. Twenty to thirty seconds is typical in a normal shop, longer in a warm room or on a thick garment that holds heat.
- Can I speed up the cooling?
- Yes — fan it, or move the garment onto a cool surface or a metal bench. What you cannot do is shorten the wait and peel warm anyway. If you are pressing a run, stagger it: press the next garment while the last one cools.
- How can I tell whether a transfer is hot peel or cold peel?
- Ask your supplier — it is a property of the film, not something you can reliably judge by looking. If you genuinely do not know, treat it as cold peel: waiting on a hot-peel film costs you a slightly different finish, whereas peeling a cold-peel film hot destroys the print.
- Is cold peel better than hot peel?
- They are different trade-offs rather than better and worse. Cold peel typically gives a smoother, more matte finish and very reliable adhesion; hot peel is faster in a production line. We use cold peel because the finish and consistency are better, and the extra twenty seconds is not the bottleneck in most shops.
