When should I order individually instead?

The principle

You are buying area either way.

There is no gang sheet discount, and any supplier offering one is really telling you their individual pricing is inflated. Pricing here is by area, full stop.

What differs is how much area a given set of designs occupies. Ordered individually, each design is priced on its own bounding box with unavoidable empty margin around it. Ganged, those margins collapse into quarter-inch cutting gaps, and the total area drops.

Same designs, same rate, less area. Note that how well you pack matters almost as much as whether you gang at all.

Worked examples

Three real jobs.

Job one — one full-front print

A single 10" × 12" design. 120 square inches, $2.99. There is nothing around it to remove, so ganging saves exactly nothing. Order individually.

Job two — twelve small crew logos

Twelve 4" × 4" left chest logos. Ordered individually that is twelve separate 16-square-inch orders plus the margin each carries. Packed onto one sheet, they sit in rows across the 22.75-inch width with quarter-inch gaps and occupy far less total area. Gang them.

Job three — a mixed team order

Fifteen player names, fifteen numbers, one team crest at three sizes. That is thirty-three separate pieces, most of them small. This is the case ganging exists for — everything on one sheet, grouped by height, cut apart on arrival. Gang them, and add spares of the small pieces.

Trade-offs

What ganging costs you.

It is not free of downsides, and they are worth knowing.

You cut them apart. Unless you add cutting at $0.25 per copy, a sheet arrives whole. For most shops that is a couple of minutes with scissors.

Everything arrives together. If designs are needed at different times, individual orders may suit your workflow better.

Layout takes a few minutes. The builder does most of it, but grouping by height and cropping tightly is worth the time — it is where the saving actually comes from.

One sheet, one destination. You cannot ship half a gang sheet to a different address.

Doing it well

Packing is where the money is.

As the chart above shows, a loosely packed gang sheet gives up about half the available saving. The two things that matter most are cropping each design tight before uploading, and grouping designs of similar height into rows so there is no dead space above the short ones.
