DTF vs Sublimation: Fabric, Colour and Cost
Dyeing versus layering.
Sublimation converts solid dye directly to gas under heat. The gas penetrates polyester fibres and re-solidifies inside them. The fabric is now that colour — there is nothing sitting on top, which is why you cannot feel it at all.
DTF prints ink onto film, bonds an adhesive layer to it, and heat-presses that whole stack onto the garment. The ink sits on the fabric rather than in it, held by the adhesive — which is exactly why the fabric underneath barely matters.

Where sublimation genuinely wins.
Hand feel
Nothing beats it. There is no print on the surface to feel, because there is no print on the surface — the fibre itself is coloured. On a performance jersey worn for sport, that is a real functional advantage as well as an aesthetic one: nothing to trap heat, nothing to stiffen.
All-over and edge-to-edge prints
Sublimated team kits and all-over-print garments are made by printing the fabric panels before the garment is sewn. DTF cannot do this in any practical way. If you want a design running across seams and around the whole garment, sublimation is the process.
Durability in principle
Dye inside a fibre cannot peel, crack or lift. It fades only as the garment fades. A well-pressed DTF transfer will outlast most garments too, but it is a layer on top and therefore has a failure mode sublimation simply does not have.
Hard substrates
Mugs, coasters, tiles, phone cases and the rest of the coated-blank world are sublimation territory. For hard surfaces without a sublimation coating, UV DTF is the equivalent tool — it bonds to glass, metal and plastic with no heat at all.

The garment-choice point deserves emphasis. Sublimation restricts you to white and light polyester, which is a narrow slice of the apparel market. DTF lets you buy whatever blank you actually want — a heavyweight cotton tee, a black hoodie, a hi-vis work shirt — from whichever supplier you prefer.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the main difference between DTF and sublimation?
- Sublimation dyes the fabric itself, which only works on polyester and only on light colours. DTF applies ink on top via an adhesive layer, so it works on cotton, polyester, blends and any garment colour.
- Can you sublimate onto cotton?
- Not durably. Sublimation dye bonds with polyester fibres; on cotton it sits on the surface and washes out. Coatings and specialty papers exist that partially work around this, but they are a workaround rather than a solution.
- Can you sublimate on a black shirt?
- No. Sublimation has no white ink and dyes rather than covers, so the garment colour shows through everything. A design sublimated onto black is essentially invisible. DTF has a white underbase and works on any colour.
- Which feels softer?
- Sublimation, and it is not close. The dye becomes part of the fibre, so there is literally nothing on the surface to feel. DTF leaves a thin flexible layer you can feel if you look for it.
- Which lasts longer?
- Sublimation, in principle — the dye is in the fibre, so it cannot peel or crack and it fades only as the garment does. A well-pressed DTF transfer lasts the life of most garments, but it is a layer on top and can fail if it was applied badly.
- When should I choose sublimation?
- White or very light polyester, where you want an all-over print or the softest possible hand — performance jerseys, sublimated team kits, mousepads, mugs and hard substrates made for it.
