How to Vectorise a Logo for Printing
Vectorise, upscale, or neither?
These are different fixes for different problems, and picking the wrong one wastes money.

Paths have no resolution.
A pixel image is a fixed grid. Enlarge it and you are inventing detail that was never recorded — which is why an upscaled logo looks soft no matter how clever the software is.
A vector describes shapes mathematically: this curve, that angle, this fill. There is no grid to run out of. The same file prints identically crisp on a business card and on a fourteen-inch back print, which is exactly the property a logo needs.
Why the one-click button disappoints.
Every vector application has an auto-trace feature, and it is genuinely useful on a clean, high-contrast, reasonably large source. The problem is that if your file were clean, high-contrast and reasonably large, you would not need to vectorise it.
- Follows JPG compression artefacts as though they were design.
- Wobbly edges where the source was blurry.
- Hundreds of unnecessary anchor points.
- Typography becomes an approximate outline, not real type.
- Circles come out not quite round.
- Clean geometry — circles are circles, lines are straight.
- Type set in the actual typeface where it can be identified.
- Minimal anchor points, smooth curves.
- Consistent stroke weights and spacing.
- Scales to any size without artefacts.
What a proper vectorisation involves.
1. Identify the typeface. Most logos are type plus a mark. If the font can be identified, the wordmark gets set properly rather than traced — which is the difference between letterforms that are right and letterforms that are nearly right.
2. Rebuild the geometry. Circles drawn as circles, straight lines as straight lines, consistent corner radii. This is where auto-trace output usually gives itself away.
3. Match the colours. Sampled from the cleanest available source, and flagged if the original is too degraded to sample reliably.
4. Check it at size. Viewed at both the smallest and largest sizes you intend to print, because problems that are invisible at one are obvious at the other.
What to send with the file.
Vectorising is partly detective work, and a few lines of context materially improve the outcome.
• The best version you have, even if it is a photo of a printed sign or an old business card.
• The typeface name, if anyone knows it. This is the single most useful thing you can supply.
• Brand colour codes, if they exist. Sampling from a degraded JPG is a guess.
• What is wrong with the current file, if a previous supplier redrew it badly.
• The sizes you intend to print, so it can be checked at both extremes.
If a file is genuinely beyond recovery — a logo at 120 pixels with heavy artefacting and unidentifiable type — we will tell you rather than deliver an approximation and hope you do not notice.
Sometimes the problem is transparency, not resolution.
A surprising number of “my logo looks bad” files are actually fine resolution with a white background baked in. That is a background-removal job, not a vectorisation job, and it is a much smaller piece of work.

Frequently asked questions
- What does vectorising a logo mean?
- Rebuilding it out of mathematical paths and live type instead of pixels. A vector file has no resolution, so it stays perfectly crisp whether it prints at two inches or twenty-two.
- Do I need a vector file for DTF printing?
- No. A PNG at 300 DPI at final print size prints beautifully. Vectorising matters when the only file you have is too small, too blurry or too compressed to print at the size you need.
- Can you vectorise a photograph?
- Not meaningfully. Vectorisation suits logos, wordmarks, line art and flat-colour illustration. A photograph has continuous tone and detail that paths cannot represent — for photos you want a higher-resolution original, or upscaling.
- Why not just use an auto-trace tool?
- Auto-trace follows the pixels it is given, including the compression artefacts and the blur. On a clean high-contrast logo it can work. On the low-quality file you are usually trying to fix, it produces wobbly edges, hundreds of unnecessary points and typography that is subtly wrong.
- How much does vectorising cost?
