RGB vs CMYK for DTF Printing
Why RGB is the right answer here.
The instinct to convert to CMYK comes from offset and commercial printing, where you are preparing files for a known press with a known profile and the printer expects CMYK. DTF does not work that way.

Which colours will shift no matter what.
A monitor emits light. Ink on fabric reflects it. Some colours a screen can produce simply cannot be made with pigment — no ink, no printer, no process. Those will print duller than they look, and no amount of file preparation changes it.
This is not a DTF limitation specifically. Screen printing with a spot colour can hit a neon because it uses actual fluorescent pigment; any process mixing from a fixed ink set cannot.
The garment changes the colour too.
Even a perfectly reproduced colour looks different on fabric than on paper. Fabric has texture, which scatters light and slightly mutes everything. The white underbase behind your design helps enormously on dark garments, but it is not a perfectly neutral white.

On polyester there is a second effect worth knowing about, which is not a colour management issue at all — dye migration moving the garment's own colour into your print after pressing.
How to actually match a specific colour.
Order one and look at it
There is no substitute. Order a single transfer, press it onto the actual garment you will be using, and look at it in daylight. With no minimum order that test costs a couple of dollars and it settles the question definitively — which no amount of on-screen proofing, soft-proofing or profile juggling will.
Adjust and re-test if needed
If the first print is close but not right, nudge the file and order another. Two rounds is usually enough. This is exactly how commercial printers handle brand colour, just at a much smaller cost.
Set the expectation upfront
If you are printing for a client with a strict brand colour, tell them before the run that an exact match is a test-and-adjust process rather than a guarantee. That conversation is much easier before two hundred shirts exist than after.
What to actually do.
• Send RGB, with an sRGB profile if you are embedding one.
• Do not convert to CMYK first.
• Assume neon and fluorescent colours will print duller.
• Judge colour on a physical transfer, not a screen.
• Test on the actual garment colour you will use.
• For a strict brand colour, budget one test round before the run.
Frequently asked questions
- Should I send RGB or CMYK for DTF printing?
- RGB. It is what most files already are, it holds the widest range of colour, and the conversion happens in production against the actual profile our process uses. Converting to CMYK yourself throws away colour information before we ever see it.
- Will my colours print exactly as they look on screen?
- Close, but not identical, and that is true of every printing process. A monitor emits light; ink on fabric reflects it. Very saturated screen colours — neon greens, electric blues, fluorescent orange — sit outside what any ink can reproduce and will print duller.
- Why does converting to CMYK myself make it worse?
- A generic CMYK profile is not the profile our process uses. Converting to it discards colours that our printer could actually have reproduced, and then we convert again from that reduced set. Two conversions lose more than one.
- How do I match a specific brand colour?
- Order a single transfer first and look at it in daylight. That is the only reliable method. With no minimum, a colour test costs a couple of dollars and settles an argument that no amount of on-screen proofing will.
- Do I need to embed a colour profile?
- sRGB is the safest choice and is what most files carry by default. Exotic wide-gamut profiles can produce unexpected shifts if anything in the chain misreads them.
- Why does the same file look different on my phone and my laptop?
- Because the screens differ — brightness, colour temperature and calibration all vary. This is a good reason not to judge print colour on a screen at all, and to test a physical transfer when it matters.
