How DTF Wholesale Pricing Actually Works in Canada
A rate on your profile, not a quote per job.
Retail pricing here is $0.0249 per square inch, published, with no setup fee and no minimum. A wholesale account replaces that with a rate configured against your profile, which then applies automatically to every order you place.
The practical difference is not just the number. It is that you stop asking for quotes. You upload, you see your price, you order. For a shop pricing customer jobs during a phone call, that removes a day of latency from every enquiry.
Four things, and volume is not the biggest.
The industry convention is to present rates as a function of volume alone. In practice what makes an account cheaper to serve is more varied than that — and the things that matter are mostly things you already do or do not do.
1. Consistency, not size
A shop ordering steadily every week is easier to plan around than one placing a single enormous order twice a year. Predictable work is genuinely cheaper to produce, and that is the thing most likely to move a rate.
2. Artwork quality
Accounts that send print-ready files consume almost no prepress time. Accounts that send screenshots consume a lot. This is the largest hidden cost difference between two customers ordering identical quantities, and it is entirely within your control. Artwork requirements →
3. Order shape
Ganged sheets, repeat designs from a saved library and consistent sizes all reduce handling per transfer. Thirty separate one-off orders and one ganged sheet of thirty designs are very different amounts of work. Building a gang sheet →
4. Volume — real, but overrated
Volume matters. It just matters less than the industry implies, because printing cost per square inch does not fall dramatically with quantity the way screen printing setup does. Anyone implying a dramatic volume curve on DTF is describing marketing, not physics.
Why published volume tiers are usually theatre.
A tier chart running from one square inch to fifty thousand looks like transparency. Often it functions as the opposite: the lowest number on the chart is the one that appears in search results and comparison spreadsheets, and almost nobody reaches the volume it requires.
The test is simple. Work out your genuine monthly square inches, find that row, and comparethat number. If the supplier is not willing to tell you which row you would actually be on, the chart is decoration.
| What you see | What to ask | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A rate at the top of a tier chart | What rate applies at my actual monthly volume? | The headline tier is often unreachable. |
| "Wholesale pricing available" | What is the rate, and what qualifies me? | A vague promise is not a price. |
| A minimum monthly commitment | What happens in a slow month? | Commitments transfer your seasonality risk to you. |
| A rate quoted per job | Can it live on my account instead? | Per-job quoting means you re-negotiate forever. |
| A very low rate with a large minimum | What is my cost per transfer I actually need? | A minimum you overshoot is waste, not a discount. |
What actually costs you money over a year.
Two suppliers at the same rate can differ substantially in what they cost to work with. The differences are unglamorous and they compound every single order.
- Ignores how long a reorder takes to place.
- Ignores whether you re-upload artwork every time.
- Ignores how many shipping charges you pay a month.
- Ignores reprints caused by unchecked files.
- Ignores whether finance can process the invoice.
- Saved design library — reorders are two clicks.
- Same-day bundling — one shipping charge per day, not per order.
- Bundled invoicing — several orders paid as one.
- A file check before printing, so reprints stay rare.
- Blind shipping if you drop-ship to your own customers.

Who a wholesale account is for.
There is no minimum order and no monthly commitment required to open one, which means the question is not whether you are big enough — it is whether you order repeatedly enough for the account mechanics to be worth having.
| You are | Worth an account? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A screen or embroidery shop adding DTF | Yes | Repeat customer jobs, and you quote against a known rate. |
| An online seller reordering bestsellers | Yes | Saved library and bundling do more than the rate. |
| A promotional products distributor | Yes | Blind shipping and invoicing matter as much as price. |
| A business ordering staff apparel quarterly | Probably | Reorders and invoicing, even at modest volume. |
| Ordering once for a single event | No | Retail pricing has no minimum and no setup fee — just order. |
That last row is worth saying plainly: if you are placing one order, you do not need an account and we are not going to pretend you do. Published pricing with no minimum already covers you. Retail pricing →
Wholesale pricing questions
- What is a DTF wholesale rate?
- A per-square-inch rate set on your account rather than quoted per job. Once it is on your profile it applies automatically to everything you order, with no negotiation and no waiting for a quote each time.
- How much volume do I need to qualify?
- With us, none — there is no minimum order and no monthly commitment to open an account. What a rate reflects is the working relationship: repeat ordering, saved designs and predictable jobs are cheaper for us to serve than one-off enquiries.
- Why do some suppliers publish volume tier charts?
- Some are real. Many are marketing — a chart with a rate at 10,000 square inches that almost nobody reaches makes the headline number look lower than what you will actually pay. Ask what rate applies to your genuine monthly volume, not the top of the chart.
- Is wholesale pricing just a discount?
- The rate is the visible part and usually not the valuable part. Saved design libraries, two-click reorders, bundled invoicing, consolidated shipping and blind drop-shipping are what actually change how much a supplier costs you to work with over a year.
- Can I get wholesale pricing without being a print shop?
- Yes. Online sellers, promotional distributors, businesses ordering staff apparel repeatedly and anyone reordering regularly are all normal account holders. It is about repeat ordering, not about what your business card says.
- Does a wholesale rate change my shipping?
- No — shipping is the same flat $9.99 per order and free over $275 before tax for everyone. What accounts do get is same-day bundling and consolidated shipping, which reduces how often you pay it at all.
