Why a normal transfer fails on glass.
A standard UV DTF transfer is printed to be viewed from one direction. Stick it to something opaque — a steel tumbler, a painted sign — and that is all you ever need.
Stick it to something transparent and the problem appears immediately. From the front it looks right. From the other side of the glass, you are looking at the back of the print: the text is mirrored, and any layered artwork is in the wrong order. On a clear tumbler held by the person drinking from it, that is exactly the angle they see most.
Double-sided UV DTF is printed so both views read correctly. It is the difference between a graphic that works on glass and one that only works in a product photo.

How to set up a double-sided design.
Simpler than most people expect: supply the artwork once, exactly as you want it to read. You do not need to mirror anything, and you do not need to send two files. The reverse side is handled in production.
Very fine hairlines and small text are legible from the direct-view side but soften when read through the thickness of glass. Heavier weights survive both views.
Designs with a light element over a dark one still read from behind, but the depth relationship inverts. Test a small one first if your artwork depends heavily on layering.
On a curved vessel, two smaller pieces conform better than one wide one. A transfer more than about a third of the way around a tumbler will fight the curve.
If you genuinely want two different graphics rather than one that reads both ways, say so in the order notes — that is a different job and we will set it up accordingly.
Applying to glass and acrylic.
- 1Clean with isopropyl alcohol
Glass shows every fingerprint under a transfer, and clear surfaces show them from both sides. Clean it, then clean it again, then let it dry completely.
- 2Position carefully — you get one attempt
On clear material a crooked application is visible from every angle. Mark your placement with tape first if the piece matters.
- 3Burnish from the centre out
Trapped air is far more visible under glass than under an opaque surface. Work slowly outwards and push every bubble to an edge.
- 4Peel the carrier slowly, at a shallow angle
If any part lifts with the carrier, lay it back down, burnish that area again, and continue.
- 5Leave it a day before washing
The bond continues to strengthen after application. Hand wash — we do not recommend dishwashers for any UV DTF application.
Double-sided questions
- What is double-sided UV DTF?
- A UV DTF transfer printed so the artwork reads correctly whether you look at it from the front or through the back of a clear surface. A standard single-sided transfer applied to glass reads reversed from the other side; a double-sided one does not.
- When do I actually need double-sided?
- Only when the surface is transparent and people will see the graphic from both directions — a clear tumbler, a glass jar, an acrylic display, a storefront window. On any opaque surface, single-sided is correct and cheaper to think about.
- Does double-sided cost more?
- No. It is the same rate as every other transfer we print: $0.0249 per square inch of printed area, with no minimum order.
- Do I need to supply two files?
- No — supply the artwork once, as you want it to read. We handle the reverse side in production. If your design has a deliberate front and back that differ, tell us in the order notes.
- Will the design look as sharp from the back?
- It reads correctly and clearly from both sides. The side viewed through the glass is seen through the thickness of the material, so it reads slightly softer than the direct-view side — that is physics, not print quality, and it is true of any graphic applied to glass.
- Can I use it on a curved clear surface?
- Yes, within reason. A gentle curve like a tumbler or a bottle is fine. A tight compound curve will wrinkle any flat transfer, double-sided or not — smaller pieces conform better than one large one.
- How do I apply it?
- Exactly like single-sided UV DTF: clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry fully, position it, burnish from the centre outwards, then peel the carrier slowly. No heat and no press.
