How to Tell Good DTF From Bad DTF
Four checks on the transfer itself.
1. Adhesive powder coverage
Tilt the sheet under a light and look at the back of the printed area. The adhesive should be evenly distributed across the entire design, right to the edges. Patchy coverage, bare spots or loose powder shedding off the sheet all mean uneven adhesion — and the thin areas are precisely where the print will lift first.
2. Edge sharpness
Look at the boundary between printed and unprinted film. It should be crisp. A fuzzy or feathered edge on the transfer prints as a fuzzy edge on the shirt, and nothing about pressing sharpens it. If the artwork itself was crisp, a soft edge here points at the print.
3. Colour density and banding
Solid areas should be solid. Visible horizontal striping across a flat colour is banding, usually a printhead or profile issue at the supplier's end. Thin, washed-out colour in a design that should be saturated is the same category of problem.
4. White underbase opacity
Hold the transfer up to the light. The white layer behind the colours should read as solid white, not grey or translucent. A weak underbase is the single most common reason prints look muddy on dark garments — the colours have nothing bright to sit against.
What a good print looks like on the garment.

The stretch check is the most useful of these and takes two seconds: pull the fabric gently across the print. A properly bonded transfer flexes with it and settles back. One that cracks or shows white lines never bonded into the fibres, which almost always means pressure or a missing second press rather than a bad transfer.
Supplier problem or press problem?
This is worth getting right before you change suppliers, because the majority of complaints we hear about turn out to be application rather than print.
- Banding or striping visible in flat colour on the sheet.
- Patchy or shedding adhesive powder.
- Grey or translucent white underbase.
- Fuzzy edges on the transfer when the artwork was crisp.
- The same defect on every sheet in the batch.
- Edges lifting after a few washes — under-pressure.
- Ink came away with the film — peeled while warm.
- Cloudy patches at the edges — no pre-press.
- Shiny rectangle on the garment — too hot or too long.
- Stiff, plasticky feel — second press skipped.
- Only some garments affected, not all.

Ten washes, one garment.
Everything above is inspection. This is the only test that actually tells you whether a supplier is any good, because it tests the bond rather than the appearance — and the bond is what fails.
1. Order one transfer. With no minimum, this costs a couple of dollars.
2. Press it properly — correct temperature for the fabric, 40–60 psi, cold peel, and the second press under a silicone sheet.
3. Wait 24 hours before the first wash.
4. Wash it ten times the way a customer actually would, including the dryer.
5. Check the edges, the stretch and the colour.
Two weeks and one transfer. Compare that to switching your whole supply on the strength of a sample pack photograph, and it is obviously the better use of the money.

Quality questions
- How can I tell if a DTF transfer is good quality before pressing?
- Look at four things: even adhesive powder coverage across the whole design, sharp edges with no fuzzy fringe, dense colour with no banding, and an opaque white layer. A transfer that fails any of these will not improve on the garment.
- What does bad adhesive powder look like?
- Patchy or thin coverage, visible bare spots in the ink, or loose powder shedding off the sheet. The adhesive is what bonds the print to fabric — uneven coverage means uneven adhesion, and the thin areas lift first.
- How do I test a supplier properly?
- Order one transfer, press it correctly, then wash the garment ten times the way a customer actually would. That single test tells you more than any sample pack, because it tests the bond rather than the appearance.
- Is a stiff print a sign of poor quality?
- Not necessarily — it is more often a missing second press. Pressing again for 10–15 seconds under a silicone sheet melts the ink into the fibres and softens the hand considerably. Judge stiffness after that step, not before.
- What does poor white underbase look like?
- Grey or translucent rather than solid white when you hold the transfer up to the light. On a dark garment that shows as muddy, washed-out colour, because the colours have nothing bright to sit against.
- Can a bad press make a good transfer look bad?
- Constantly, and it is the more common explanation. Under-pressure, a missed second press or peeling while warm will ruin an excellent transfer. Before blaming a supplier, run the paper test and check your platen temperature.
