What Does a DTF Transfer Cost Per Shirt?
What each print position costs.
| Placement | Typical size | Square inches | Cost each |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleeve or pocket print | 3 × 3 in | 9 | $0.22 |
| Left chest logo | 4 × 4 in | 16 | $0.40 |
| Youth front | 8 × 8 in | 64 | $1.59 |
| Adult full front | 10 × 12 in | 120 | $2.99 |
| Large back print | 11 × 14 in | 154 | $3.83 |
| Oversized back | 12 × 16 in | 192 | $4.78 |
There is no setup fee, no film charge and no minimum, so the cost of one left chest print is genuinely $0.40 rather than $0.40 plus an administrative fee that makes small orders uneconomic. All standard sizes →
A 24-shirt run, all in.
This is the number people actually want: everything added, tax included, divided by the shirt. Each row is a run of 24 with cutting included and HST at 13 per cent.
| A run of 24 | Printing | Cutting | Shipping | HST | Total | Per shirt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Left chest, 4 × 4 in | $9.60 | $6.00 | $9.99 | $3.33 | $28.92 | $1.21 |
| Full front, 10 × 12 in | $71.76 | $6.00 | $9.99 | $11.41 | $99.16 | $4.13 |
| Back print, 11 × 14 in | $91.92 | $6.00 | $9.99 | $14.03 | $121.94 | $5.08 |
And at a hundred pieces
A hundred full-front transfers is $299.00 of printing plus $25.00 of cutting, which clears the $275 free-shipping threshold — so shipping falls away and the all-in total is $366.12 with HST, or $3.66 per shirt. The rate per square inch has not moved; the shipping simply stopped applying.
What a finished shirt actually costs you.
A transfer is not a shirt. To compare against a quote from a decorator, add your blank and your labour — and once you do, the picture is usually still favourable, but it is a real comparison rather than a flattering one.
Whatever you pay for garments. We sell blanks too if it is easier to have them arrive together. Blank apparel →
Pre-press, press, cold peel, second press. Under two minutes a shirt once you have a rhythm, and it is the cheapest labour in most businesses.
This is the quiet advantage. A transfer fits any size, so you are not guessing a size curve and eating leftovers the way you do with pre-printed stock.
There is not one. Screen printing charges per colour per screen, which is what makes small multi-colour runs expensive elsewhere.
Three things that genuinely help.
1. Size the design to the garment, not to the page
Area is the price. A full front at 10 × 12 inches rather than 12 × 14 is not a smaller print to anyone looking at the shirt, and it is meaningfully cheaper per piece across a run. Standard placements and sizes →
2. Gang several designs onto one sheet
Ordering as a gang sheet packs designs together so you pay for less empty film. For mixed sizes and small quantities it is the single biggest saving available. How to build a gang sheet →
3. Cross the free-shipping threshold deliberately
If an order is close to $275 before tax, adding the pieces you will need anyway costs less than paying $9.99 twice on two separate orders. How shipping is charged →
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a DTF transfer cost per shirt?
- It depends only on the printed area. At $0.0249 per square inch, a 4 × 4 inch left chest is $0.40, a 10 × 12 inch full front is $2.99, and an 11 × 14 inch back print is $3.83. Cutting adds $0.25 per copy if you want them trimmed.
- Does the price drop if I order more?
- The per-order rate does not change with quantity — one transfer and a thousand transfers price at the same rate per square inch, so a small order is never penalised. What does change your rate is a wholesale account, which is set on the account rather than per order.
- What is not included in the transfer price?
- The garment. A transfer is the printed part only, so add whatever you pay for blanks and a few minutes of pressing labour. That is also why transfers look cheap next to a decorated shirt — you are comparing a component to a finished product.
- How is the square-inch price calculated?
- Width times height, times the rate, times the number of copies. Nothing is added afterwards and nothing is estimated — the exact total is shown before you pay.
- When is shipping free?
- Transfer orders ship for a flat $9.99 anywhere in Canada, and free once your pre-tax items subtotal is over $275. It does not change with weight, quantity or province.
- Is cutting worth paying for?
- Usually, for anything past a handful. Trimming a run by hand is slower than people estimate and the result is less consistent. At $0.25 per copy it buys back more time than it costs on almost any order above about twenty pieces.
